I don’t understand why all the life hack methods to fold shirts actually save space in your suitcase. If I just fold it normally (or even just scrunch it up) and make sure that there are no packets of air in the shirt, surely the volume that the shirt takes up would be the same and so it makes no difference? Or am I missing something obvious?

Folding is more to keep the clothes presentable when you unpack them than efficient storage. If you just scrunched them up they’d be terribly wrinkled with weird creases all over them.
