[ELI5] Do all the “efficient” methods to fold shirts actually save space?

I don’t understand why all the life hack methods to fold shirts actually save space in your suitcase. If I just fold it normally (or even just scrunch it up) and make sure that there are no packets of air in the shirt, surely the volume that the shirt takes up would be the same and so it makes no difference? Or am I missing something obvious?

You have a set shape to fill (your suitcase), some folding methods give you building blocks that are easier to combine than others. Large squares vs small diameter cylinders etc.
