eli5 Do flames have shadows?

Recently saw something on instagram that got me into thinking. Can somebody help me understand why? Is it because it is literally the source of light?

Sometimes. A flame is hot gas, so it is completely transparent. But if it is sprinkled with sooty byproducts of combustion, then it will have a shadow. But even more, when light passes through the different densities of different temperatures of hot gas it will bend away from a straight line and this creates a sort of shadow.
