eli5 Do Invasive Species Get Hurt When They Enter A New Ecosystem?

My son (12) asked me this the other day and I couldn’t find any quick information on Google. Still unsure, and if not, what is the explanation?

Just like an organism can end up in a new ecosystem and thrive with no natural predators (this is normally what we mean when we say “invasive species”), it’s also common that a transported species finds itself at a disadvantage and dies.

Could you elaborate on your question?

If an invasive species can survive in the ecosystem, it’ll *thrive*. Without natural predators or competition for land and other resources, that invasive species will only lose the expected numbers.

To be an invasive species is to be very well-suited to the environment you’re arriving in.

If the environment you’re arriving in is bad for you, you won’t be an invasive species because you won’t be able to compete with the natives.

It’s very common for species to be brought over from other countries and just *fail* in their new environment, but no-one pays attention to those aside from zookeepers, because they have no real environmental impact.
