Everyone has points. The difference in points tells us who is most likely to win. When we see a result we expect the loser only gives the winner a few points. When we see a result that is surprising, the loser gives the winner lots of points.
New players also get and lose extra points to try to get them to the right count sooner.
The magic of the math is logarithms. Every 400 points difference means you are 10x better. So a 1200 point difference is 1000x better! This means the result is dramatically less surprising.
