Eli5 : Every single day at my school there are these large puddles of water around campus and around 35-50 hornets or wasp I’m not sure are swimming in or flying around them like crazy , why ?

Insects do need to drink water as well. It is not just animals. But it could also be that the water catches the pollen in the air from the trees and flowers around and that attracts insects which feed on the pollen.
Bugs need to drink water too, my friend.
Common to see them near the drains at pools as well.
