eli5 forecheck/backcheck in hockey

I’m a new hockey fan who started watching a year ago and I’ve never played.

What is a forecheck and a backcheck? I’ve always been confused about this strat.

A forecheck is when the forward(s) are in the offensive zone (inside other teams blue line) either controlling or going after the puck.

A backcheck is when the forward(s) come back into their defensive zone in order to regain possession of the puck
