Eli5- Free money phone games. How do they work?

So I’m sure this is obvious (and I have a pretty good idea) but I keep seeing adds that let you play solitaire and make like a ton of money per day. No referrals, no ads, no nothing. So how does this happen since free money is not a thing and I don’t see (at least upon my ads) it’s free money for anyone. What’s the scam here?

Gambling. Just about every casino has a bank of computer solitaire machines, and there are known rules for payouts that give the casino an edge even when the player is perfect. The ads can point to the possibility of winning a lot of money, but in the end you will lose money.

They are not “free” you pay for them or their is advertisements or both. And for example sake let’s say this game is in fact free and has no advertisements, than you are the product being sold (this happens with everything now btw). I didn’t realize how scary and invasive digital information could be until I heard about it first hand. We hired a company to do advertising for our restaurant and they explained on how it works. They send out mass emails to an area or list of people with a link for a coupon or a promo. You click the link, presumably on your phone if not it still works, and now they generated an “account” for you as a potential customer. With that they now know you are interested in the food and will send you more emails all because you clicked the link. That is not even the scary part, the scary part is if you opened that link on your phone and go into the restaurant they now know if you saw the email and went into the restaurant because of sensors on the doors. And with the same sensors they are now able to keep track on how many times can you come to the restaurant

The ones that are truly free are a strategic initiative created by gambling companies to increase consumer sentiment for gambling so consumers pressure lawmakers for legislative reforms. If you listen to earnings calls for some of the big online gambling and casino companies they’ll lay this out.

Tl;Dr: Like drug dealers, the first one is free to get you hooked.

Edit: also like others have said, you are the product. They’re offering a free service to build data on expected future returns once they monitize you. They know exactly what percentage of people they give their free games to will become addicts too. It’s built in their financial models.
