There’s a few types of air but In short
Air isn’t just gases it’s also a bunch of dust and particles flying around. If you don’t replace the air regularly those particles can become excessive and make the air feel stale.
Fresh air has a lot less of these particles which makes it easier to breath and less smelly.
On a side note;
Dead air is air that’s been sitting a while, usually completely isolated from fresh air. This is dangerous as build up of carbon dioxide, dust and other chemicals can make the air unbreathable. This is usually a problem in confined spaces, such as old under ground bunkers and caves.
