ELi5: how are album sales calculated now, considering streaming music?

Not sure if this is what you were looking for, but streaming services keep a record of every stream. There’s a video where Snoop Dawg finds out he got a billion streams and he got a whopping $40k for it, so apparently they have to track it to compensate artists.
