With a lot of the beats it’s possible to use your tongue to push or pull air and flop your lips to create sounds, while independently breathing through your nose.
Try it, make a tsk tsk tsk sound and breathe through your nose.
They either makes still beatbox while inhaling, which is limited to some sounds and effects, or they take very quick breaths every so often, like wind instrument players.
