Eli5: How are ceramic coatings different from the stock car paint?

Ive been seeing a lot of ads about ceramic coating or ceramic paint for cars. Im seeing things like “graphene” infused stuff and other things.

Are these things better than basic auto paint? Why arent car manufacturers using this if they are indeed better? Are they just a scam?

These coatings are applied on the top of existing automotive paint. They are designed to *enhance* paint that is already in good condition, and not fix damaged paint.

Some benefits include improved gloss (a layman may not spot the difference), some level of “self cleaning” ability (this does **not** mean you do not need to wash your car), and purportedly added chemical and UV resistance. What it does not do is protect against stone chips or scratching, and it is not a cure all for your automotive paint woes.

It really is a product aimed at the enthusiast because the effects are minimal to the untrained eye, and ceramic coatings require their own maintenance much like bare automotive paint does. “Graphene” and “nano” are hype words used within the automotive detailing industry to imply a higher quality product.

If you are seeing unsolicited ads and asking these questions, then the products you are seeing are most likely scams. The new car dealer options available for ceramic coating are also considered scams.
