Eli5 – How are computer viruses created without destroying the creator’s computer first?

I’ve always wondered how computer viruses are made. If someone creates a virus on their own computer, wouldn’t it infect and potentially destroy their system first before it’s spread to others?

i would install linux on a sd card and create the virus from there. you can easyly make clones of that installation by using the DD command, so if you got 3 sd cards, you will always have a working os you can copy.

Hey there. So the best way to understand computer viruses is to first know thaaaaat

Computer viruses are not like nature’s viruses. Instead, you can build all the pieces of the puzzle in front of you, and then you can do other things like checking to see how well it works.

Well, that needs a VM or another computer. A VM is a Virtual Machine that lets us create a computer inside of a computer.. Inception style! It’s better to use the VMs to build your pretty things, that way you can purposely infect a VM and see what it does…. then just wipe it away… and start over, it’s ok.

Anyways, if it’s malware you want to explore

I’d advise using time and eyes to remove the surprise when u accidentally melt down your core.
