Stamps have to be purchased through commissary. They have a direct cash value and almost everyone needs them so they can act as a currency to trade for items or services. They are also easy to store and trade. Some prisons do not allow you to hold onto your own stamps to avoid this, but just about any commissary item can become a form of currency in a prison.
