i come from germany and there it feels natural that plants mostly survive the summer because there will always come rain at one point. however, now i moved to turkey and i see how in spring time everything is green, then comes 6 months of no rain where every wheats and grasses kind of dies.
but when autumn / winter comes with the first rains, everything comes back again. i know, in real desert places, this phenomenon is even more bizarre and extrem.
how do small plants survive? it can’t be all new seeds. somehow the plants come to life, after being “kind of” dead? do they sleep? is there still 0.0001% humidity in the soil that keeps them alive? how does it work?

Plants adapt to their environments. Drought tolerant plants that die off at the surface will store energy and moisture underground in their roots. This dormant state doesn’t require a lot of energy to maintain.
Once the roots detect new moisture, and appropriate ground temperature, they will send out new shoots allowing them to gather energy to store for the next go round.
Plants are actually pretty amazing and robust things.
