eli5 how can meth change a persons pyshicaly changw the way a person look

i recently came across this question when i saw a photo of an actor for the movie “mighty ducks” and saw a before and after photo with him on meth. since meth is just a nervous system stimulant how can it change someones apperance so much

Because it’s not just a nervous system stimulant. Amphetamines interfere with our body’s functioning in more ways than we’ve even worked out yet. Yes, overstimulating the brain and cardiovascular system causes dramatic damage (you seldom meet an old meth user), but you’re right that all meth users look old.

A recent study in rats found that meth increased production of fats called ceramides that regulate cell aging and death by way of inflammatory cascades. Sort of like making all the cells in your body feel very sick, and very old on a chemical level. More complete details below.

Admittedly rodent models don’t always translate well to human models, especially where immune systems are involved, but for an effect so dramatic and universal (meth causes premature aging and death predictably in every user), this alone is enough information for my purposes.
