Eli5: how come some bald people have a shiny smooth head, while others have that rough texture

It depends on when the person started balding and how fast they lost their hair. My husband has a shiny top part but shaves the sides so the sides are rough. If he didn’t shave he’d be bald on top but have hair on

Bald/smooth- permanent hair loss/alopecia
Shaved head- hair has been shaved close to the head but the person can still *grow* hair.
