Dams, excessive removal of water for farming and infrastructure, homes and industry throw waste into it. A lot of sewage also drains into it (a while back i read about 3 million liters a day roughly)..most of which untreated.
Add to that that it is a sacred river so people bathe in that and also people poop in it…but to be honest with that sewage the few pooping in it isn’t really contributing much more.
It is a human created catastrophe not a natural phenomenon that makes it so dirty
