In a crowd surge it’s easy to fall down or be pushed off your feet and end up prone on the ground. In that position one is very vulnerable to be trampled. Injury or death can occur very rapidly in this scenario.
Imagine you are in a crowd entering a,stadium. The crowd is fifty people wide, and 300 people deep. The crowd wants to move forward, but now is blocked. Each person presses against the person in front of them a bit, say, five pounds force.
You are at the front, stopped by the closed fence. All the people behind you, each adding five pounds to the pressure, cause you to be pressed against the fence with a force of 1500 pounds.
You die.
And notice, this happens with no violence, nobody falls down, nobody steps on anybody. I think you can see how it can easily get much much worse.
