Eli5- How did Dune 1 and other movies that were released through theater AND a streaming service make up their money?

So for those people who decided not to go to the theater and just watched it at home-that was one less ticket bought, so one less ticket for profit for the movie, right? How did those movies make up that loss? Or did they just take the hit?

The movie was delayed due to COVID, so I guess it made sense to go to streaming as people were still reluctant to go to public

Dune made enough money from ticket sales to be profitable.

But aside from that, HBO is owned by Warner Brothers. HBO/WB got to use marquee content to drive subscriptions on their HBO Max service. I’m sure there was a substantial fee paid somewhere for that privilege that the movie’s producers got a cut of.

The cinema ticket was cheaper than renting at home. Plus the cinema experience can’t be reproduced in my living room. No brainer.

Theoretically, if you have these movies on your streaming service, and that convinces someone to sign up for a subscription, that‘s where you make your money. HBO Max was a new streaming service, so getting people to sign up was a priority.

Without looking at Warner‘s financials, we don’t know that they did make money. They stopped doing concurrent releases, so I suspect it wasn‘t that profitable. It may have just been an experiment that didn’t pan out, or it was the best option Warner had when people weren’t going to the theaters.

Weirdly, Dune was also licensed to Netflix. So it got ticket sales, drove some share of subscribers to Max, the Warner Brothers/HBO service, and then was also licensed to Netflix for a period of time on that streaming platform.

During Covid they raised the price of rental on Sky and Disney+

Instead of the usually £5 ish they shot up to £15

And. Ow most films that are new to them start at £15 for the first couple of months and then drop down to a more reasonable price
