Eli5- How did Dune 1 and other movies that were released through theater AND a streaming service make up their money?

So for those people who decided not to go to the theater and just watched it at home-that was one less ticket bought, so one less ticket for profit for the movie, right? How did those movies make up that loss? Or did they just take the hit?

Dune made enough money from ticket sales to be profitable.

But aside from that, HBO is owned by Warner Brothers. HBO/WB got to use marquee content to drive subscriptions on their HBO Max service. I’m sure there was a substantial fee paid somewhere for that privilege that the movie’s producers got a cut of.
