Eli5: how did the ticketing issue with the COPA America Final occur on such a large scale compared to other major sporting events that occur in the US?

We have multiple events throughout the year where fans travel across the country for a game, but this sort of issue doesn’t happen with those. Sure ppl resell old tickets or other scams but not where thousands are left outside the gate.

Is the issue on the mgmt company over COPA? Cultutal differences with live events and scamming? We don’t see hundreds to a low thousand trying to push their way into a stadium at a finals or championship game for other events due to ticketing issues.

Lol, nobody feel like touching this one?

There were tens of 1,000s of people entering the stadium without tickets as soon as the gates were opened.

When non ticketed attendees enter at a faster rate than the ticketed guests, eventually, there is no room.

My guess is that the organizers underestimated the passion of those soccer supporters. The US does not have anything like that. For example, the supporters of both teams were not even separated. Unthinkable in South America or Europe. Organizers there would plan for people trying to get in by all means, and even then, it happens occasionally.

And the official organizers, Colombia, did not seem to be concerned with the actual organization.

I don’t know enough to know for sure but from my understanding the Copa team turned down help from the US federation and the hard rock facility itself in running game day ops.

The copa mgmt was wildly underprepared and that in combo with a crowd willing to just plow past the limited security led to the mess you saw.

From my limited understanding they didn’t have nearly enough security infrastructure and people in place to stop the stampede.

Please also consider that this might just be a coincidence. These things sometimes happen.

Now if we see a trend in the future…
