How are they able to tell me my body fat, muscle weight, body water, etc? The thought is insane to me

Those metal strips on the scale that you’re standing on bare-foot? It’s sending electricity into your body, and measuring it coming through the far side.

The numbers are just estimates, but they’re probably close enough.

You’re talking about a bio-impedance scale. It’s literally a math equation based on your sex, height, weight, and the “speed” with which an electric current passes through your body. Compared to things like immersion tanks, DEXA scans, and other expensive equipment, they’re often highly inaccurate. I’ve seen some read body fat percentages that we almost 10% off of what the actual number was.

Though I’ll say if you use them to measure change over time with regard to your own personal metrics, they’re probably a useful tool (as long as you’re using the same device in the same manner and within the same environment every time).
