I returned bottles to one of these places today and my dad tried to explain it to me but I am still confused. The money you get back is just the deposit paid but didn’t that go to the store? So the return facility is just giving you money? I thought it had something to do with the state because of the NY ME 5c thing. Please help

The deposit is transferred to the state. The state keeps the money. When you return them, the state gives the money to that business.
