Eli5: How do cell phone waves make it back to the tower from my phone?

The cell towers are heavily powered so the signals go out but how does my phone with a much smaller power source transmit the data back to the tower?

Cell towers not only have more power to transmit further, they also have a larger antenna to receive signals better (the hint is in the name – tower).

If you think of it like people having a conversation. You can have two people with strong voices shouting across a room. But if one person only has a weak voice, the other person can have both a strong voice and big ears and they can still communicate.
