Eli5: How do cell phone waves make it back to the tower from my phone?

The cell towers are heavily powered so the signals go out but how does my phone with a much smaller power source transmit the data back to the tower?

Your phone only needs to talk to a few cell towers at a time so it doesn’t need a lot of power especially since they’re are usually a few close by in most developed countries. The cell tower on the other hand has to talk to hundreds and hundreds of devices and transmit that info to other towers/satellites/whatever to complete the task.

They simply need different power sources for different task.
