ElI5: How do doctors know based off of one look if something is swelled or not? Like the throat area

You see these body parts everyday. Eventually you start to notice what looks a little enflamed. A general trick though is looking at surrounding tissue to compare

When swollen, your skin stretches and will be more smooth over that area and be a little more shiny. Easy to see to the trained eye.

The same way you can tell when your ankle is swollen: it doesn’t look like the millions of ankles you’ve seen before in your life. Just because it’s the throat and a non-doctor isn’t used to looking at them much, doesn’t mean there is much to it. Stare at throats long enough and you’ll start to be able to tell when they’re swollen.
