As others have said, mainly through the magazine Nintendo Power. They also had help lines – I bet they’d give you cheat codes through there.
The thing about cheat codes is that they weren’t “easter eggs.” They were meant to be given out. That has two benefits. One is selling magazines for additional revenue. The other is generating interest in the game. If you give someone a cheat code, it can make them want to get the game to use it!
There are two different types of cheat codes. The classic combination ones like up down left right…. These are added by developers and are jokered. You hit the combination of buttons and it edits a line of code to the cheat and boom you have infinite ammo. The 2nd is a hacked line of code by someone who extracts the game files and go in and edits a line of code manually to reach the same outcome. Over the years developers have tried to stop the 2nd type by encrypting the files or having it check for edited lines ect but if there is a will there is a way. Up until ps4 me and my buddies used to hack games for fun but now I don’t have the desire or time. Interesting fact most patches that are released usually are also intended to fix hacks as well. They will shift the lines of code or use a different encryption. It’s was always a battle between us and the next patch.
