Light bounces off an object to the eyes and whatever wavelengths weren’t absorbed is interpreted to specific colors. The eyes send those light signals to the brain which interprets it as vision
Exactly like how you see pictures and videos in your head when read the words in a book. Your brain filter out the lights and voices from the outside world and concentrate to your inner vision.
Keep in mind not everyone “sees” things when they visualize in their head. I don’t got example. When I visualize something it’s not like looking at a picture. I didn’t even know some people could imagine in color until I was an adult. I can describe what I visualize in my head and manipulate it but I don’t “see” it. For those who do I imagine either they have to close their eyes to visualize things or their mind simply ignores or deprioritizes what they see with their eyes to focus on what they are “seeing” with their mind.
