Eli5: How do large properties/campuses have such large bandwidths for internet

How are they able to support thousands of users at one time? I do a speed test and they aren’t like fiber optics level of speeds so how can they have so many users at one time? Is it because there are so many routers placed around the area? But even when I’m on campus I don’t see any wireless routers outside.

those networks are designed to limit the bandwidth access of each individual device so that they can service as many as possible, so while you see relatively slow speeds on a speed test, the actual connection is much faster and they just gave you a tiny piece of it.

As for why you don’t see many wireless routers, they can be built into walls or soft ceilings and more mesh-style outdoor ones get designed with a cover that makes them less likely to be noticed
