muscles are basically a huge bundle of fiber-like muscle cells. These cells are very elastic. When you use a muscle, these cells contract, pulling themselves in and shortening the fibers. this pulls on anything the ends of the muscle fibers were connected too, like other tissues or bones.

muscles, at least skeletal muscles, cannot directly push anything. rather one muscle simply relaxes while another muscle on the opposite side starts pulling if you want to move in a different direction
