For a lot of people wear and tear on you spine and the force of gravity eventually causes some of your vertebrae to fuse together and your spine to curve.

Little old ladies have that distinctive curve to their backs, that’s what causes you to get shorter as you get older

Your body isn’t totally solid, the only solid bits are the bones.

And as you age, the ligaments and cushioning tissue between your bones will wear down and shrink, so each if each of the bones in your spine get a fraction of an inch closer together, that adds up across the whole spine.

Because gravity is a b*** and your spine is full of jello between all of the vertebrae that is compressed after 70 years of fighting gravity/body weight/etc.

Between your vetebrae are disks that helps cushion your spine. They act as shock absorbers. They are mostly fluid filled. As you age, the disk lose more water and shrinks. The shrinking discs will cause you to lose height.
