In the cases involving placebos for pain….scientists don’t fully understand pain.
It’s multifactorial, 100% subjective, pain is whatever you say your pain is.
Look up ‘total suffering’ in relation to palliative care.
A tablet is one aspect of symptom controll and one aspect only
