eli5: How do screws and pins and pegs help with a boroken ankle?

Question

I broke my ankle in 3 places and I have pens, pegs and plates after an operation.
I have gone to my moonboot now, and my foot is stiff and sore. How is this helping my healing?
Bonus question: How do you sleep when you are moonboot?

Screws and pins help hold the broken bones in place while they heal. Pegs are used to hold the screws and pins in place.
