eli5: How do screws and pins and pegs help with a boroken ankle?

I broke my ankle in 3 places and I have pens, pegs and plates after an operation.
I have gone to my moonboot now, and my foot is stiff and sore. How is this helping my healing?
Bonus question: How do you sleep when you are moonboot?

The pins and plates etc hold the bones together until they heal and reunite. Orthopaedic surgery is basically carpentry with bone instead of wood, with Meccano attached if required. It takes a while for new bone growth to repair a fracture, so the ironmongery secures all the broken bones together so that as the callous forms and new bone grows, they grow together.
