The air that is in the goggles is a gas. As you go deeper you have the gas taking up less space which creates a vacuum, plus the added pressure from the water above you. The strap is just there to keep it from getting knocked off.

So basically, you see best when there’s air in front of your eyes. Goggles do just that and trap air in front of your eyes and keeping the water out.

Same as pool goggles, but bigger.

You know how suction cup work? same principle. it sucks to your eyes and prevents water from getting in.
