This whole missing submarine has got me confused regarding the limited oxygen. How is it limited and what makes it deadly? How does the oxygen “run out?”

The oxygen runs out because the sub is under water with no access to fresh air. The occupants consume the oxygen that is in the sub and exhale carbon dioxide. There are no plants to consume the carbon dioxide and create oxygen.
