Any fire that burns with complete combustion will produce no smoke. Charcoal is almost pure carbon, burning with good insulation and plenty of oxygen, so, it burns almost perfectly clean.

They have a separate pathway to provide extra air to the fire a few inches after the initial combustion location.

The extra air makes the fire hotter, and that burns off the usual smoke particles
