Eli5, How do street/stunt artists make money?

While someone like Banksy or David Choe is a slight exception, how does someone who either does street/graffiti art or any type of artistic stunt make money and build a name for themselves? I’m aware there’s social media and branding, plus the wealthy contacts and friends that influence arts value but compared to someone marketing their art or selling it online how do more “experimental” artists monetize their productions?

A lot of street art you might see that isn’t obviously vandalized graffiti is commissioned work.

The owner of the building will pay the artist to put up their work on the building.

Street artists use that work to further publicize other work and get other commissions. They are usually also making and selling art in other mediums.

That’s all for the full time artists. Many only do it part time and work other jobs to make ends meet, because *very few artists pay their bills on art alone*.

Sell photos of it. The world is crazy. There is an artist the glass company I work for does things for where we print a color inside the glass then paint it black and he was selling these for 15,000$ a piece. It’s just a black piece of glass if you put your face on the wall you can see a tint. It’s not about the art it’s about the ability to convince people it’s valuable.

they pretty much don’t

get a stem degree or a trades cert and get to journeyman…

they frequently live off family/friends or on the street(in a van for example)
