eli5: How do tech companies do it so that face ID doesn’t recognize a picture of that person?

(edit: for the purposes of this question I’ll only consider Apple’s Face ID system but thank you to everyone who addressed Android and others) 🙂

Does faceID work if the person is dead?

If you want to do facial detection *without* a depth sensor, you might consider checking for motion. If someone holds up a picture of your face to a lower-grade facial detection sensor, it might not initially work, but record a video of their face and put it up, and the sensor detects it as the real deal — this is exactly what happens with Windows Hello’s facial recognition.
