Eli5: How do the tiny wheels of airplanes carry it?

1.44K views

They seem to be so small and unstable, thinking about the weight of the airplane, especially filled with passangers and luggage. How do they carry the weight, as well as being able to accelerate and break and everything?

Tiny wheels would carry a ground vehicle, too, just not with the same level of durability and stability as bigger wheels.

Planes only travel on wheels for a small fraction of a journey and the rest of the time the landing gear is dead weight, so they’re engineered to be as small as safely possible.
