Eli5: How do they make the fake OS for computers in movies and are they functional?

They are designed in Adobe After Effects. They’re ‘baked in’ as in, not actually interactive – just a video clip essentially. Actors have to work with them. In the industry, they’re called a FUI – Fake User Interface. Reason: copyright issues.
Back in the day, didn’t they have a problem with computer monitors operating on different frequency than the cameras? So, they would add all the on-screen animation in post.
In The Matrix there is a scene where they hack in to a computer, the OS is a Linux and the vulnerability that they exploit is a real one.
