eli5: How do trash companies manage to keep up with holiday schedules and complete the same workload in a shorter workweek?

Why not just always work the 4-day workweek if they can get the same work done in less time as they often do after holidays like Memorial Day?

Depends on the trash company, but if they normally have pickup days monday through saturday then the answer is probably “overtime.” Start early, end late.

The company I use only has pickup on monday – friday, so on holidays they just push back the rest of the week and end on saturdays. And probably still pay overtime.

The trash collectors do also collect from a lot of places that does not have a scheduled trash pickup. For example a lot of commercial and industrial sites have a larger container that the trash collectors can pick up at any time. And for example public trash bins might be collected by the same companies that collect private bins. So they might move some of these routes to other weeks away from the holidays. The trash collection companies also have other tasks then just collecting trash, they might do the sorting as well and a lot of other related tasks. They might defer some of these tasks during short weeks to get extra crews doing trash collection. Similarly the employees have their personal vacation some times during the year and this might be better to do away from public holidays. As for equipment they do need to have spare trash collectors in order to allow for breakdowns and scheduled maintenance. So if they have extra crews they just make sure to not schedule maintenance at these dates.

Some areas do have 4 day weeks. Mine does not have residential collection on Mondays at all. If a holiday falls on a day other than Monday they will work Mon-Thur that week.

In my city, they don’t normally have trash pickup on Monday. So that alone eliminates a few holidays. Then they move everything over one day for holidays and pick up trash on Monday to make it up.

For example, my trash is picked up Friday. But the Friday after Thanksgiving, they run their Thursday route. Then pick up my trash on Monday.

Our garbage pickup ignores holidays, but pays workers more on those days.

Workers want to do holidays for the extra pay.
