eli5: How do trees get bigger? What’s physically happening to them?

Eli5 answer: they are growing, trees like us are made up of cells. Their cells are multiplying. There are different parts of trees, branches, leaves, roots, trunk, to name a few. Some parts of the tree may not be living but still attached to the tree, like the outer layer of bark.
