Eli5 how do we have moon quakes with no tectonic moon plates?

Similar to how the moon affects the tides here on earth, the earth is causing an expanding and contracting effect deep within the moon. The change in temperature will contribute to moon quakes as well.

Great question! There are lots of good theories here but the short answer is that nobody, including the experts, really knows for sure why moonquakes happen.
Moonquakes are a really mysterious phenomena and the scientists who study it have in no way come to any consensus on what exactly they are or what causes them. Moonquakes are quite frustrating really because they throw a wrench into our understanding of the moon’s geology… lunaology?
