ELi5: How do we know the rocks used in the great Egyptian pyramids weren’t from the site?

Because when they looked at the ground, the rocks that make the pyramids don’t match the rocks in the ground.

We looked at their composition. The stones used for the pyramids contain materials not founds in that particular region, so logically they could not have been extracted from any stone quarry in that region. They _do_ match the composition of stones found in nearby regions, so logically the stones came from those nearby areas.
