Eli5 How do weather forecasts differentiate whether it will remain cloudy or the clouds will lead to rain?

How do we know that it will remain cloudy but won’t rain? Or if the clouds will surmount to any precipitation?

It’s really about lifting that moisture. If it is a cloud or fog that is stable and just sitting at 1 level, then not much precip. If you can introduce some kind of destabilizing upward force, like fronts, jet maxes, then you can generate upward vertical motions that lead to cumulonimbus and nimbostratus clouds. I’m a big believer of the adage that if you can’t explain this shit to grandma, get out of meteorology.
