I’d like to understand the dynamic of how these websites make money.

dubious companies pay them money for referrals or ads, often in form of popups, which you might not see if you’re using an adblock service.

Advertisers can look at the traffic they receive from running ads on those sites, and decide whether it’s worth it to them to run those ads.

Apparently it is, because they keep doing it.

Gelbooru has ads flanking every section of every single page, or do you use adblock?

What I don’t understand is why businesses are turning down top advertising slots just because the content are NSFW.

We used to think that these super specific domains would be worth $$$$$

Then it turned out every company’s happy just to have their name as the TLD

Turn off all your adblockers and go to one of them for a minute or two. You’ll find out pretty quickly how they make money.

That said, when it comes to image archival sites like gelbooru, sankaku, etc., they’ve been expanding into subscription models as of late, and limiting what free users can do (such as limiting tag filters in search queries, limited visibility “premium” content – which is ironic since it’s just other people’s art anyway).

tl;dr ad sewage + subscriptions
