In the case of gelbooru, which is just one of many sites dedicated to scraping artwork to a self-contained gallery, they generate enough traffic to sell adspace at pretty high prices. The problem is that anime fandom as a whole is tech savvy and likes to use adblockers, so that forces the booru sites to rely on alternate avenues like subscriptions to to turn off remaining ad placxements and perpetual donation campaigns. They break even, but it’s not anywhere near the peak of the site’s popularity when the software was first rolled out.
Is this an advertisement for gelbooru? I’ve never heard of it but you successfully tied it to sex.com. Everybody’s heard of sex.
