eli5 How do you know what direction a building is?

How can they name a building northern, western, southern, or eastern where it can be in any direction depending where you are?

Well it would have to be in reference to some point, right? Like if a certain building is on the western end of a college campus then you could call it “west faculty” or something because it is west of the center of campus
